I have a new BX2230 with only 10 hours on it. Great machine. I love it. Perhaps a dumb question. I have read the posts about diesel fuel additives and have added Power Service and a fuel stabilizer in the amounts as suggest by folks. I've run about 1/2 of a tank with these additives and when I start the engine I still get some diesel smoke. It smokes enough I've noticed that the brush guard next to the exhaust has blackened quite a bit. Is that usual? How long does the additives take to cut down on the smoking? Is this typical for a new engine? I have also noticed the additives have quieted the engine some too.

Any diesel will smoke a bit on startup. A new one, however, should not smoke while it is running if it is in good tune. I have a permanent black spot on the wall of my garage from my BX1500. Now I usually pull it away from the wall before I start it. My uncle's 20 year old L2250 smokes a little for the first couple minutes after startup, especially in the winter, but it's normal and there is no reason for concern. Even my neighbor's brand new M5700 coughs up a puff of smoke when he starts it. I'll tell you... that is a nice machine. I'd swear it is quieter than my BX. ....

bvance: I do not know the technical side of your question, but my BX23 starts with a small puff of black exhaust before changing to usual light exhaust.
jarndt: Just courious. Is the neighbor with the brand new M5700 the same one that you helped with the gravel drive last weekend? If so, the "tractor envy" must have been strong enough for him to go out a buy a tractor the next day. ....

Ha! That would be great... an M5700 on 2.5 acres! Actually, its not the same neighbor. And I should clarify... the M5700 is about two years old but has less than 200 hours on it, so maybe not "brand" new. That neighbor has a 180 acre horse farm and a barn-ful of toys for his machine. ....

A puff of visible smoke when starting is unavoidable.
The additives reduce the "warmed up and working" smoke and make the engine run quieter and smoother. ....

As Mark mentioned a puff of smoke on start up and rapid large throttle increase under load is normal. I little smoke until the engine reaches operating temp. is normal as well. I am not sure about this but on older Kubota engines there is a smoke control adjustment on the fuel injection pump. I believe it had 3 or 5 different positions to compensate for smoke control. I am not sure if the newer engines have this or not. If you still think yours is smoking abnormally; you may want to look into this and see if you can make a smoke control adjustment to the injection pump if in fact there still is this feature on the newer engines. ....

Thanks for all of your information and advice. It does smoke for a second at start up and then runs clean and smooth with no noticeable smoke. So sounds like it's normal. ....

My 2001 BX2200 does the exact same thing. My brush guard on the front is black as well. Another guy telling you it's normal. It stinks too when you first start it. Holding the glow plugs a little longer doesn't seem to reduct the smoke either. Per the book, about 3 seconds on a normal day. Don't sweat it and run it hard! ....
